A Quarto-size (4to, 220 x 160 mm, 8¾ x 6¼ inches, roman type), professionally restored and beautiful condition early King James (KJV) Holy Bible in a VERY GOOD+ condition, containing the Old and New Testaments bound together with the Apocrypha, Speed's genealogies, the Book of Common Prayer and a (musical) Psalter, printed by Tho: Buck & Roger Daniel, printers to the University of Cambridge. Complete Bible with all title pages, plus the title page for the Genealogies, the Book of Common Prayer and the Psalter.
It opens with a complete Book of Common Prayer (printed 1638) including the prayer tables, the various special prayers and the "Pfalmes of David of the old tranflation, pointed as they fhall be faid or fung in Churches." Within the Common Book of Prayer (after the tables) the complete "Geneaologies Recorded in the Sacred Scriptures, according to euery Family and Tribe: with the line of ovr Sauiour Iesvs Chrift observed from Adam to the bleffed Virgin Mary by J.S. Cvm Privilegio" are bound. Next, "The Holy Bible. ...", including all prelims. Separate title page for the New Testament. Contains the complete Apocrypha. The New Testament title has an ornament woodcut border. Decorated chapter initials. Ends with colophon. Lastly the "Whole Book of Psalmes" (1638).
The general title page is engraved depicting Moses and David, the four Evangelists, the Last Supper, the hart and other subjects, signed Jo. Payne sculp., the title contained in a small rectangle at the centre, undated as called for but neatly hand dated, the titles to the Common Prayer, the NT and the Metric Psalms have a narrow patterned border and the small oval device of the Alma Mater Cantabrigia, the NT title page is dated 1637 and the colophon is dated 1638, ruled throughout in red including the title pages, decorative head- and tail pieces and initials. Bound to style in modern dark brown morocco, blind ruled border to covers, raised bands to spine ending in blind triangle ornament to covers, gilt lettered title to spine (The Book of Common Prayer), new endpapers.
Common Prayer: title page margins repaired with some loss of text, loss of lower corner of Genealogies' divisional title and of text on verso, a further leaf of CP worn and chipped at edges with slight loss of text, second page of calendar (A2) misbound after A4, some light staining, some 18th century notes on the blank H4. Bible: tiny loss to upper margin corner of title page, very short closed tear to lower margin, margins throughout slightly trimmed, occasionally shaving the running titles, occasional small light stains with no loss of legibility, some light thumbing to a few margins, text mostly very clean, 3 pages slightly worn at 1 edge, 1 with partial loss of running title, a few closed edge tears, some with old paper repairs, 2 leaves of Apocrypha trimmed at fore-edge with partial loss of sidenotes and with a short closed tear running into text, neatly repaired with no loss of text, a few 19th century notes on blank leaf at the end of NT. Metric Psalms: very pale damp staining to upper outer corner throughout, with some erosion to pages 99-106 with fraying and slight loss to upper and fore-edge margins at the corner and with some small holes in text resulting in loss of a few letters, final leaf repaired in the margins and to a small area of text with some loss (image 11).
