This is an ASTOUNDINGLY
beautiful 3rd (large) folio of the King James Bible printed at The
Theatre in Oxford at 1684. Masterly restored to its original style
as a church pulpit Bible complete with chain to secure it to the
pulpit! Very beautiful dark leather covers and spine. The 5-raise
band spine has a red label with the gold text "Holy Bible" and the
date printed "1684". On the cover are large metal covers and a huge
center piece - this all on BOTH the front and back covers. The Bible
can be closed with 2 matching clasps and it has a chain in period
style of about a fout and a half to chain it to the pulpit.
The full page engraved
title represents the Transfiguration above a mountain inscribed Mt
Tabor Matt 17.1. Across the center is a label 'Holy Bible'. In the
foreground are seated two symbolical femlae figures: one, veiled,
representing The Law; the other one with a nimbus, The Gospel. At
the bottom a small view of the Theatre at Oxford and the imprint
"sold by Thomas Guy at y Oxford Arms"
starts with the book of common prayer, lacks its title, first two
leaves of the kalender are lined with tissue on both sides, followed
by all the original prelims including the general title, then the
complete O.T. and apocrypha. New Testament title incorporated into
the title to Matthew as called for. Then followed
by the index and the Whole book of psalms lacking its final leaf.
The Bible is 100% complete otherwise lacking only the BCP title and
the last leaf of the Whole book of psalms.
condition! The Bible has under gone a complete museum-quality conservation leaving
no paper issues. It has wide margins all around, minor usual foxing
and soiling, virtually free of damp staining, clean gutters and
strong corners. There are some ancient annotations written neatly
and there are a few leaves in the N.T. with old ink blots ranging
from dime to quarter size. A gorgeous example of a late restoration
period English Bible.
