A nicely preserved, 1615 Quarto-size,
beautifully (antiquarian quality) rebound Geneva (Breeches) Holy Bible in a VERY GOOD condition, containing the Old and New Testaments
with
the gorgeously engraved John Speed's Genealogies of Adam to Christ
with the double page maps and Concordances (2 Tables) plus a Psalter. Printed in London by the renowned Robert Barker.
The Geneva Bible is often
referred to as the 'Breeches' Bible because of its translation in
Genesis 3:7 as "and they sowed figge-tree leaves together, and made themselves breeches" (the
KJV has "aprons").
"The Bible: Translated According
to the Hebrew and Greek, and Conferred with the Best Translations in
Divers (various) Languages. With Most Profitable Annotations Upon
All Hard Places and Other Things of Great Importance as May Appear
in the Epistle to the Reader. And also a most profitable
Concordance, for the ready finding out of any thing in the same
contained."
The Bible itself is complete
but lacks the General Title. The title 'to the second part' (before
Psalms) and the NT titles are present. After the Map the Bible
starts with the first page of Genesis. Printed in Roman font with
the complete set of famous Geneva engravings and maps.
Also bound with a complete book
of Genealogies (no title, 34 pages) and the double page map of
Canaan, 2 Concordances (tables) and at the end a metric musical
Psalter (with title of 1615, lacks after Psalm 148). Stunningly bound in morocco leather covers with wooden boards and a
4 band
spine with the text 'Geneva Bible - 1615'.
This QUARTO sized Geneva Bible is
in an overall VERY GOOD and DAILY USABLE condition. gorgeous
and excellent binding.
Gold gilt pages. Complete Bible text . Average wear and some soiling, light foxing,
Some text loss in the margin of Isaiah page 57. Fair/tight margins
around the pages (occasionally cutting into the headers). Some cut
corners etc. Various other smaller damages throughout. See pictures.
