1573! - THIS IS RARE 2ND QUARTO EDITION OF THE BISHOPS BIBLE PUBLISHED BY RICHARD JUGGE
A truly breath-taking historically very important Bible in MUSEUM quality: Bishops Bible - in amazing condition. COMPLETE with all titles (general title is a facsimile) and complete Bible text with engravings. NOTHING lacking at the end, but ending with the colophon (and a complete book of Revelation), followed by an almost complete 1573 John Daye metric/musical Psalter (with title, also red-ruled). This is the first edition that has the Book of Common Prayer version of the Psalms in the Bible text.
Exquisite binding of the highest quality likely from the mid 1800s. Beautiful leather gold stamped/decorated boards (center decoration in gold and red with 'IHS' [Jesus] and corner flowers) and spine with the text 'Holy Bible'. Gold gilt page edges.
General title provided in facsimile, all other titles present: 2nd part (before Joshua), 3rd part (before Psalms), 4th (Apocrypha) and the New testament. All these titles show three of Jugge's small devices: (1) a Cupid holding the letter R and an arrow, (2) a pelican and (3) a nightingale in a tree with the printer's name on a scroll. At the end of Revelation is a large device below the colophon ("Imprinted at London in Powles Churchyarde by Richard Jugge, Printer to the Queenes Maieftie") of the pelican.
Text in black letter. RED-RULED (by hand) throughout. Various maps and engravings throughout including the 'Garden of Eden' at Genesis 1, a full page 'tabernacle in the desert' engraving in Exodus and the map of Paul's travels at the end of Acts ('The Cart Cofmographie'). Also various tables.
John Day's Psalter at the end has the title, musical bars and is almost complete (all Psalms, Hymns etc are present, few prayer pages likely lacking).
Overall VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT condition. The binding is holding well and the covers are not spilt in any way. Can be used as a daily ready (with care as always). Overall a BREATH-TAKING Bishops Bible in a superb binding. Remarkable clean pages with red-ruling. Page edges have been cut in the past but margins are present however sometimes tight at the top (see pics). Lacks all prelims. General title provided in facs. Some provenance notes, esp on the title of the Psalter which contains many personal details on its printer John Daye (perhaps he owned it?). Complete Bible text in remarkable condition.
An astounding very early Bishop Bible!
