This is an AMAZINGLY preserved and rare 1576 Geneva Bible. The absolute FIRST Geneva folio Bible edition ever printed: printed in England by Christopher Barker!!!
With ALL the original title pages: The general title to the Bible (mounted) as well as the New Testament title with all titles dating the Bible to 1576 - 'Imprinted at London by Chriftopher Barkar, dwelling in Povvles Churchyard at the figne of the Tigers Head, 1576'
This Bible is complete including all prelims (dedication of Qveene Elizabeth, 'to our beloved...', Names and Order of the bookes...). Also with large print of Barker's device (a tiger's head - the crest of his patron, Sir F Walsingham) on the verso of the New Testament title as well as at the end of Revelation. Also table of 'the order of the yeres...'. Lacks after that.
Printed in Roman Type with double columns, includes a extensive set of  in-text engravings and engraved/illustrated first chapter initials.
This Bible is described in Herbert's catalog as number 143. this is the much rarer 'A' variant which is also recognized as the true first printed in England.
In the front is the book plate of  the Marquess of Headfort. The Marquess of Headfort is a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created in 1800 for Thomas Taylour, 2nd Earl of Bective. Despite the official title, the family unfailingly use the alternative rendering Marquis of Headfort, and this is the spelling more commonly encountered in references to family members.
VERY GOOD+ to EXCELLENT condition! Bound in blind stamped brown leather covers. Binding holding well and the Bible can be read/used daily. Very small slight separation at the top hinge of the spine. Complete Bible (except for some tables at the end).  All in amazingly well preserved condition. Title mounted, loss to edges, slight damp stain in Genesis ending or much lighter by Exodus, Blank present between Apocrypha, NT Title very fine, Order of the Yeres. This copy does not have the Map in Acts and the plan in Ezekiel (according to Herbert these are likely only in the B variants). Large margins around all the text! Very nice!
