[Geneva - Breeches - Bible], "The Bible, That is the Holy Scriptvres coneined in the Old and New Testament. Tranflated according to the Ebrew and Greeke, and conferred with the beft Tranflations in diuers languages. With most profitable annotations vpon all the hard places, and other things of great importance. Imprinted at London by Robert Barker, Printer to the Kings moft Excellent Maiestie 1608"

translated in Genesis 3:7 as "and they sowed figge-tree leaves together, and made themselves breeches."  The accepted meaning is "coverings" (the KJV has "aprons").
A truly fascinating and striking piece, this is a Geneva Holy Bible, bound with the Apocrypha, both Testaments and the Concordances. Bible is in English Black Letter font, in English, two columns with frequent notes and marginal commentary, as shown throughout. Original leather boards with light wear and rounding, the spine neatly and very attractively rebacked with thick, raised bands, as well as a gilt and black title label, as shown. Binding is very strong and firm. The text has some light staining / light foxing in places and some fingermarks, although nothing major. The Bible begins with the last few leaves of an old Booke of Common Prayer, with the Godly Prayers being the first page present after the blanks. There are a bit damaged. The first blank in front has a nice exerpt on the Breeches Bible, as shown, and the following blank has some inscriptions, one being from Langhlen Rattray, and another from Mary Beatts, certainly from the late 1700s. Verso of Concordances has an owners inscription (Peter Dodd), probably late 1600s; there are few marginal repairs, but again, very nice inside. Bible begins preface to the Christian Reader, then with the first page of Genesis, lacking everything before (title and one prelim- Bible text starts at sig a3); Bible also lacks NT title page but remains textually complete, with gorgeous woodcut devices and again the Black Letter print throughout. Bound with 'Two Right and fruitfull Concordances...', nearly complete (lacking the last leaf or two at the end). The title and prelim of the Concordances have been misbound a few leaves in, please note, and they do carry a date of 1608. The Bible text has been compared to the digital image of the 1607 quarto edition on Early English Books Online and it matches as does the collation (with Old Testament ending in leaf numbered 435; New Testament ending with leaf 554).
A nicely preserved Geneva 1608 Bible
