A nicely preserved, 1584 (VERY EARLY!) Quarto-size, well bound Geneva (Breeches) Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments and the Apocrypha plus two concordances, and bound with a Psalter and Prayer Book. Printed in London by the renowned Christopher Barker.
The Geneva Bible is often referred to as the 'Breeches' Bible because of its translation in Genesis 3:7 as "and they sowed figge-tree leaves together, and made themselves breeches" (the KJV has "aprons").
Very attractive restored with calf leather brown covers and spine with gold stamped decorations and red label/gold lettered 'Breeches Bible - 1584". The Bible is printed in 2 columns black letter (Gothic) text with the extensive Geneva Bible notes in Roman font on the sides and as footnotes. Decorated with chapter initials and many colophons.
The Bible text itself is almost complete (it lacks the General title and a page in Matthew) and preliminary pages, like 'How to take profit of the Scriptures', 'Of the incomparable treasure', 'the Sum of the Whole Scriptures' and 'Certain Questions and Answers about the doctrine of Predestination' and 'The names and order of all the bookes'
Bound with the complete 'Two right profitable and fruitful Concordance' (with title by Christopher Barker and colophon) and 'The Whole Booke of Psalmes' (lacks title, starts with Veni Creator and lacks after Psalm 106). In the front is also a Book of Common Prayer (lacks before the morning prayers).
This QUARTO sized Geneva Bible is in an overall GOOD to VERY GOOD and DAILY USABLE condition. Solid binding. Opens and reads easy. New endpapers. Complete Bible text (except for missing page in Matthew chapters 8-11, page with chapters 5-7 is one page misbound). One page in the apocrypha (Baruch) is lacking. Lacks general title but New Testament tile page is present. Average wear and some soiling, light foxing, Fair margins around the pages (some headers cropped). Various cut edges, tears, various repairs etc etc throughout. See pictures! Some previous ownership scribbles. Offered at a very attractive price for such an early Geneva Bible.
A very early and nice 1584 Breeches Bible!
