Description

The complete Bible in the original languages with an interlinear Latin translation. Printed general title page (1584) with printer’s device Text in two columns with first chapter woodcut initials, interlinear Latin text, and occasional marginal notes. Ends with the Greek Apocrypha. Hebrew Old Testament starts at the end of the volume with printed title page (1584) and printer’s device, followed by Preface. Text in two columns with occasional side notes and interlinear Latin text.

Collation

[par]^4, A-Y^4, Z^6 (-Z6), Aa-Qq^4; [cross]^4, [cross][cross]^6, A-O^6, P^8, a-x^6, y-z^8, aa-gg^6, Aa-Rr^6. NT lacks final blank, otherwise complete.

Binding

Eighteen century gilt-paneled red morocco. Boards with arabesque corner and center decoration. Spine with six raised bands, compartments elaborately decorated in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Inner dentelles. All edges gilt. Spine chipped at head and foot; corners bumped.

Condition

[par]4 lower marginal repair; slight browning, one or two small holes in text, but clean and sound.  

Provenance

A penciled note reads “Crawford Sale” – probably from the library of the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres (the Bibliotheca Lindesiana), which was one of the greatest private libraries in Britain.

The work is reprinted from the great Antwerp Polyglot of 1569-72, one of the greatest scholarly printing achievements of the sixteenth century. Produced in Antwerp between 1568 and 1572, it was sponsored by King Philip II of Spain, edited by the Spanish orientalist Benito Arias Montano, and printed by the master printer Christopher Plantin.
