Woodcut title page (1611) within ornamental frame. Each of the four chapters begins within a headpiece and decorative initial. Text presented in single-column Roman font within ruled border. Outer margin contains cross-references and few notes. Includes two indexes at the rear.

Binding

Brown period calf. Covers with central lozenge decorated in gilt surrounded with a blind paneled border to edges; Spine with five raised bands and elaborate gilt tooling to compartments with a black morocco label and the words “Calvins Institution” lettered in gilt. Rebacked and recornered with original backstrip laid down. Endpapers renewed.

Condition

Title page soiled to edges; [fleuron]3,4,Hhhh repair to margin only; C2 closed tear into text without loss; occasional staining to foot; a few marginal annotations in two contemporary hands in both English and Latin; Ooo6 lower marginal loss. An attractive copy of Calvin’s most important work.

“Christoph L Bisley” inked to front endpaper. “John Brough booke 1676” across title page and “John Brough his booke Hedon” to fore-edge of text block.

Note

Calvin explores both "knowledge of God" and "knowledge of ourselves" with profound theological insight in four books. The first book discusses God the Father; the second God the Son; the third the Holy Spirit; the fourth the Church. Calvin began his work as a catechism in 1536 and it grew to an extensive systematic theology by 1560.
