Summary
The first quarto King James Bible in black letter type. A well-preserved Bible text rebound in period calf. A very early King James Bible which closely follows the text of the 1611 first folio edition including the variant “he” reading in Ruth 3:15.
Description
Both title pages (1613) provided in expert facsimile. Titles engraved within woodcut border comprising twenty-four compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Both titles omit the words “Appointed to …” Text in two column black letter, closely following the text in the first edition. Ruth 3:15 with the reading “And he went into the citie.” Apocrypha included as issued. Concludes with colophon (1613). Bound with The Two Concordances by R[obert] F. H[erry] with title page (1613). Numerous woodcut first chapter initials and head- and tailpieces throughout.

A^8 (-A1, general title supplied in facs), A-Z^8, Aa-Zz^8, Aaa-SSS^8 (-Ccc3-6, NT title and Matthew 1:1–8:28 supplied in facs).
Binding
Rebound in modern black calf in period style. Covers paneled in blind with corner fleurons. Spine with four raised blind-lined bands and blind tooling to compartments with a gilt-lined morocco label and the words “Holy Bible” and “1613” in gilt to foot of spine. Endpapers renewed. All edges red.
Condition
Infrequent soiling and staining, but clean overall with good margins; repair to lower margins of prelims; G1, Fff6 with a few short closed tears; fore-edge margin of Pentateuch with light damp stain; lacks final few leaves of Tables with last leaf repaired to margins.
Note
The first black letter quarto edition of the King James Bible. This early printing closely follows the text of the first edition He Bible but at a much lower price point and in a portable format suitable for daily use.
