Description
General title page (1644) within double ruled border featuring a woodcut illustration of the parting of the Red Sea. Text in two column Roman font. Two full-page engravings of the furniture of the Tabernacle and the vestments of the High Priest. Five woodcut maps in the text. Issued without Apocrypha which is also omitted from the List of Books. New Testament title page (1644) within double ruled border featuring a female head between two cornucopia. The woodcuts in this edition follow those inserted in the 1610 Edinburgh printing. First chapter woodcuts initials, head- and tailpieces throughout.

Binding
Rebound in attractive black calf, elaborately tooled in gilt. Covers with gilt-tooled arabesque centerpiece surrounded by a triple gilt ruled border featuring elaborate corner fleurons. Spine with five raised bands, gilt tooling to compartments, and a red gilt-tooled morocco label with the words “Holy Bible” and 1644 lettered in gilt. Renewed marbled endpapers Lightly rubbed.
Condition
Occasional spotting and staining as typical; very clean overall; great margins throughout; F3 small marginal loss; [par]4 (prelim to NT) with small marginal loss; a particularly clean copy of a scarce Dutch printed folio Geneva Bible.
Provenance
“Sir David Murray” in early hand to first page of Genesis; 18th century family history records of the Allen family beginning in 1776. One record mentions “my dear wife departed this life Feb 29, 1820 … she was – but words are wanting to say what I think – what a wife should be an she was that.”
Note
Aside from a 1778 London reprint of the Geneva Bible, this is the final Geneva Bible printed with over 200 editions from 1560-1644.
