Note

Henry Hammond (1605–1660) was appointed President of Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1643 and was allowed to attend Charles I as his chaplain. A prolific writer, he authored over 50 works and was influenced by Arminianism. This Paraphrase is his most famous work, reprinted in six more editions into the nineteenth century. His contributions lend credence to his reputation as the father of English biblical criticism.
