Description
Each page is printed from an engraved plate, with decorative borders and illustrations in the text, all double ruled in red. The volvelle to p.5 is missing, as typical. This edition of The Book of Common Prayer is Sturt's masterpiece and took him 3 years to complete. The entire book was engraved by hand on 188 silver plates, which allowed the intricacy of his engraved illustrations to be printed in extreme detail.

Black morocco, expertly rebacked with original spine laid down. Elaborately gilt-tooled boards with cottage roof design incorporating leafy sprays, acorns, flowers, pendant drops, and rosettes. Spine with six raised bands and elaborate gilt tooling to compartments. Marbled endpapers. Rubbed and slightly splayed.
Condition
Closed repaired tear across title page with loss to a few letters of text verso and recto and impacting the Royal Arms; occasional spotting and staining but quite clean and crisp overall.

An enduring monument of English devotional printing, the 1717 Sturt Book of Common Prayer remains one of the most ambitious engraved service books ever produced in Britain.
