Summary

A quarto edition of the King James Bible in a contemporary binding with beveled oak boards and metalwork. A well-preserved black letter example with the illustrated Genealogies and the popular double page map of Canaan.

Description

Begins with general title page (1632) engraved within woodcut border comprising twenty-four compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Titles feature a heart shaped frame. Bound with the illustrated Genealogies depicting the lineage from Adam to Christ by J[ohn] S[peed] with printed title page surrounded by a woodcut border, followed by the double-page map of the Promised Land. Text in two column black letter. Apocrypha included as issued. Similar New Testament title page (1631). Concludes with colophon (1631). Bound with The Whole Booke of Psalmes by Sternhold and Hopkins with title page (1632). Numerous woodcut first chapter initials and head- and tailpieces throughout.

Collation

A-Z^8, Aa-Zz^8 (-Kk1), Aaa-Rrr^8. Complete with all title pages. Lacks Kk1 (Isaiah 53:6-57:19).

Binding

Light brown contemporary calf. Covers paneled in blind over beveled oak boards with five surviving cornerpieces and two center bosses. Rebacked in lighter brown calf with five blind-lined raised bands and the words “Holy Bible” and “1632” lettered in gilt. Retaining hasps with clasps perished. Plain endpapers.  

Condition

Occasional soiling and spotting; Kk6,Nn7-8 with fore-edge reinforced; Ll1 loss to upper margin reducing headline; upper left portion of woodcut border to New Testament title replaced in facsimile; Fff4 (Matthew 24) repair to text and loss of sidenotes and a few words of text; some staining to Psalter with final leaf guarded; A clean text overall with good margins.

Early seventeenth century inscriptions of William and John Whoatley to verso of preface with a poem written by John to verso of NT title.
