Description

General title (1642) within woodcut border comprising twenty-four compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. Text presented in two column Roman font and ruled in red throughout. Apocrypha not included as issued. Similar woodcut New Testament title page (1642). Ends on colophon (1642). Bound with The Whole Book of Psalmes with printed title page (1646) within decorative border. Decorative head and tailpieces, colophons, and woodcut first chapter initials throughout.

Binding

Bound in a contemporary embroidered stumpwork binding with extensive floral couched goldwork. Rubbed contemporary pale pink velvet. Spine sometime relaid. New plain endpapers, all edges gilt. A little rubbed with some wear but still a nice tribute to the original craftsman.

Condition

“Downes Nanturick” inked to head and a few small stains on first leaf of Genesis; general title page with one short tear to head; first two leaves trimmed without loss; signatures Bb, Ggg very slightly protruding from the text block; Rrr8 loss to upper corner with loss to sidenotes. Minor marks, blemishes, or occasional reading wear but a wonderful and unique King James Bible in a stunning binding.
