NOTE
First printed in 1539, the Great Bible was the first English Bible officially authorized for use in the churches of England. Prepared by Miles Coverdale under the direction of Thomas Cromwell, it was intended to provide every parish with an approved English Bible that could be read publicly by clergy and ordinary people. King Henry VIII ordered that a copy be placed in every church, where the large folio Bible was often chained to a lectern. Its impressive size, described as “the Bible of the largest volume”, gave the Great Bible its familiar name.
The Great Bible made the English Scriptures available to the people on an unprecedented scale. Although revised by Coverdale, much of its text remained the work of William Tyndale, who had been executed only three years before its publication. Each original leaf represents an important moment in the history of the English Bible, when Scripture moved from being a prohibited book to one authorized for public reading throughout England.
