The Holie Bible.
NOTE
First published in London by Richard Jugge in 1568, the Bishops’ Bible was prepared under Archbishop Matthew Parker to replace the Great Bible in English churches and answer the growing influence of the Geneva Bible. Its impressive large folio format features double columns of bold black-letter type, with 57 lines to a full column.
“In typography and illustration this is perhaps the most sumptuous in the long series of folio English Bibles.” - A.S. Herbert
The Bishops’ Bible became the prescribed starting point for the King James Version of 1611. The translators were instructed to follow it and alter its wording only as the original Hebrew and Greek required, while consulting earlier English translations, including Tyndale’s and the Geneva Bible.
