Note

The official liturgical book of the Roman Catholic Church, which contains the rites and ceremonies performed by bishops rather than ordinary priests. It provides the prescribed forms for episcopal ceremonies including ordinations, consecrations, confirmations, the dedication of churches and altars, the blessing of sacred objects, and other solemn rites reserved to the episcopacy.

As such, the volume offers a direct window into the ceremonial and sacramental life of the sixteenth-century Roman Church at the height of the Counter-Reformation. Its instructions govern not only the words to be spoken, but also vestments, gestures, processions, blessings, anointings, and the use of liturgical objects within which Catholic bishops exercised their office.
