Description
Begins with an incomplete The Book of Common Prayer lacking all before the Psalms. Printed general title page (1594) with small woodcut of the Red Sea. Text in two column black letter type. Apocrypha included as issued. New Testament title page (1594) with architectural woodcut border featuring Lady Justice and Mercy. Concludes with the Two Concordances by RFH with a printed title page (n.d.). Bound with The Whole Booke of Psalmes (1592) by Sternhold and Hopkins, lacking final leaf of Prayers, as commmon. Woodcut first chapter initials and decorated head and tailpieces throughout.

Binding
Rebacked brown calf. Boards in polished calf retaining six of eight metal cornerpieces and both centerpieces. Evidence of clasps. Marbled endpapers. Spine with four raised bands, blind tooling to compartments, and a black gilt-lined morocco label with the words “Holy Bible” in gilt and date of 1594 to foot of spine. All edges red. Protected by clamshell.
Condition
Title page soiled with marginal loss, and laid down; Yy8,Qqq8 lower marginal repair; Iii2 short repaired closed tear; NT short closed marginal tear to fore-edge repaired, writing on verso showing through; infrequent spotting, browning, and soiling but a clean copy.
Provenance
Verso of final leaf of BCP with inscription “Ex Libris S.G. Eliot 1795”. Verso to final leaf of Apocrypha with inscription “Tho Hambris” and “M Briston.” Verso of NT title reads “The Widow Vannicker her book 1772” in a neat hand.
