Description
General title page (1599) supplied from another copy and trimmed to text and woodcut, all laid down. Text in two column black letter type. Bound without Apocrypha. New Testament title page (1599) with woodcut architectural border featuring Lady Justice and Mercy. Bound with The Whole Booke of Psalmes by Sternhold and Hopkins (1599), ends on dated colophon. Woodcut first chapter initials and decorated head and tailpieces throughout.

Binding
Rebacked brown calf over oak boards. Covers with blind stamped centerpiece within blind-ruled border. Retains three metal cornerpieces and one working clasp. Spine with five raised bands and the words “The Bible” and “1599” in gilt. Protected in a clamshell case.
Provenance
Note to end of Old Testament reads “John Goodgame … I give this Bible to my wife Mary Goodgame May the 12, 1698.”
Condition
H1,O2 marginal repair; A1-4,Tt5-6,Lll6 perhaps supplied from another copy; NT title page stained; final few leaves of Psalter frayed and soiled with loss; thumb soiling to fore-edge margins; some dampstain to the New Testament.
Note
Unlike the many pirated Geneva Bibles bearing a false 1599 London imprint, this copy is an authentic artifact. Featuring black letter text, it lacks the later heart-shaped general title pages. Printed in London toward the end of the sixteenth century, this edition is a relatively clean example of a Bible that saw approximately ten reprints with counterfeit 1599 title pages.
