Description

Begins with the Book of Common Prayer, lacking title page and prelims. General title page (1606) with woodcut border comprising twenty-four small compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Text in two column black letter type. Apocrypha included as issued. Similar New Testament title page (1606). Concludes with the Two Concordances by RFH with a printed title page (1606) and dated colophon (1606). Concludes with The Whole Booke of Psalmes with printed title page (1605), lacking all after Psalm 136. Woodcut first chapter initials and decorated head and tailpieces throughout.

Binding

Rebound in brown speckled calf. Boards paneled in blind. Spine with four blind-lined raised bands and blind tooling to compartments, with a red gilt-lined morocco label and the words “Holy Bible” and “1606” in gilt. Plain endpapers. 

Condition

Occasional browning and spotting, but mostly clean and bright; short closed tear to upper margin of general title page; A1,R3,Ttt3 small marginal loss. A lovely quarto Geneva Bible.

Provenance

Extensive seventeenth century family records of Peter Evlysman and descendents through the eighteenth century on verso of final BCP leaf and across margin of general title page.
