Description

General title page (1611) with woodcut border comprising twenty-four small compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. Text in two column black letter. With Apocrypha as issued. Ends on colophon. With Two Right Profitable and Fruitful Concordances by R[obert] F. H[errey] with printed title page and colophon (1611). Bound with The Whole Booke of Psalmes (1612) with printed title page. First chapter woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces throughout.

Collation

[par]^4, A-Z^8, Aa-Zz^8 (-Dd4,5), Aaa-Lll^8, *^4, Kkk-Yyy^8, Zzz^10. Lacks Psalms 9:15-19:5 and New Testament title page.

Binding

Brown Cambridge paneled sheep. Boards with blind rolls and decorative blind stamps to center and corners. Spine with four raised bands, blind stamps to compartments, and a red morocco label with the words "Holy Bible” lettered in gilt. Plain endpapers. All edges red.

Condition

Text with a crisp impression; light toning and slight dust-soiling with infrequent damp-staining and spotting in places; C2 torn at head with slight text loss; Xx7, Yy5 with hole and small text loss; Aaa1 upper corner torn with loss of a few words; a few closed tears; trimmed at head occasionally touching headlines; a well-preserved copy of a black letter Geneva Bible.

Provenance

*4 with “Thomas Rutter ye son of Edward Rutter & Chris: his wife was borne ye 12 of July about a 11 a clock in ye morning 1686” in an early hand; Yy6 with “Eliza Groves afterwards (Clarke) and neice of both Saml. Perkins & James Perkins of Marton & Picklescott, Salop, died at Wenfford Villa Llangollen - on Friday Jany. 21st 1881 - aged in her 89th year, John Clark Davies, eldest Grandson of above - Jan 23rd 1881”; final leaf with inscription: “Thomas (?)Dyas: his booke - Anno Domine: 1662: May 20th: John Farley” and front pastedown with inscription: “John Clarke Davies. From his affectionate Grandfather & Grandmother, August 10th 1866”. The front pastedown with a wonderful note: “Search the Scriptures.”
