A textually complete copy of a quarto King James Bible, printed just two years after the first edition. Bound with the Illustrated Genealogies and the highly sought after double-page map.

Description

Begins with the Genealogies with printed title page by J[ohn] S[peed]. Text in two column Roman font, the text is presented without a printed border.  Ruth 3:15 with “she went…” Apocrypha included as issued. New Testament title page (1613) engraved within woodcut border comprising twenty-four compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. The NT title omits the words “Appointed …”. Concludes with colophon (1613) and tailpiece. Woodcut first chapter initials and head- and tailpieces.

Binding

Rebound in attractive brown calf. Covers double paneled in blind with stamped and diapered central decoration. Spine with five raised bands, blind tooling to compartments. Plain endpapers. 

Condition

Ii3-6 frayed to edges costing a few marginal notes; Qq3-6, [P1]-[P2],[F4]-[F5] reimagined; Qq6-7 with tears and small hole costing some letters; Tt6 handful of small burnholes; NT title with two small holes and two short, closed tears; Vvv1-4,[M4] small, mostly marginal loss; Xxx1,8 loss to lower third of text; [A4],[B1],[B3] marginal repairs; [B6] lower corner repaired with loss of a 14 lines to outer column; [C8],[D1],[F7] loss of lower two lines of text; final leaf of Revelation with browning and spotting; seventeenth century birth record entries in contemporary hand to verso of final text leaf. A good copy of a scarce and valuable King James Bible, printed shortly after the first edition.
