Summary

A textually complete copy of a quarto King James Bible, printed just two years after the first edition. Bound with the illustrated Genealogies and with the She reading in Ruth 3:15.

Description

Begins with the Genealogies with printed title page by J[ohn] S[peed]. General title page in facsimile. Text in two column Roman font, the text is presented within a printed border. Ruth 3:15 with “she went…” Lacks the Apocrypha, likely removed by a zealous Puritan. New Testament title page (1613) engraved within woodcut border comprising twenty-four compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. The NT title omits the words “Appointed …”. Concludes with colophon (1613) and tailpiece. Woodcut first chapter initials and head- and tailpieces.

Collation

(-*1, title page), A-Z^8, Aa-Zz^8, Aaa-Fff^8, Ggg^4 (Old Testament), Vvv-Zzz^8, [A]-[M]^8 (New Testament). Lacks general title page only.

Binding

Rebound in modern brown half calf with cloth over boards. Spine with five blind-lined raised bands and one dark red, gilt-lined morocco label and the words “Holy Bible” lettered in gilt. Endpapers renewed. All edges recently trimmed.

Condition

Staining and occasional browning to text; Genealogies title page with loss and laid down; first leaf of Genealogies strengthened to edges; D4 of Genealogies with loss and repair; general title page in facsimile; Bb4 upper corner repaired with loss to a couple of letters of text; NT title page and [M]8 strengthened to edges without loss; A good copy of a scarce and valuable King James Bible.
