Summary
The first black letter quarto edition of the King James version. A nice He Bible with both title pages.
Description
General title page (1613) engraved within woodcut border comprising twenty-four compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. Text in two column black letter. Ruth 3:15 with “he went…” Apocrypha included as issued. New Testament title page (1613) with similar engraved border. Concludes with colophon (1613) and tailpiece. Bound with Two Right Profitable and Fruitfull Concordances by RFH with printed title page (1613). Woodcut first chapter initials and head- and tailpieces.
Collation
A^8, A-Z^8, Aa-Zz^8, Aaa-Sss^8. Lacks C3 (Gen 45:26-48:2) and C6 (Ex 3:16-6:6).
Binding
Bound in later dark blue calf. Boards paneled in gilt and blind rolls. Spine with three recessed bands and a dark brown morocco label with the words “Holy Bible” lettered in gilt. Endpapers renewed. Ex-libris armorial bookplate of Michael Stoughton to front pastedown.
Condition
Joints rubbed with upper joint starting, but holding firm; general title with repair and small tear but without loss; some staining and soiling with damp stain to first few leaves; Kkk5-6 torn with loss of sidenotes; about ten leaves with edge tears resulting in very slight text loss; Ppp2-4 lower margin torn with loss to two lines of text.

Extensive inscriptions to verso of general title listing favorite Scripture passages; “John Knighton his Booke September 1747” before Genesis; similar inscriptions before the Apocrypha and on verso of NT title.
