Description

Begins with B2 (page 9) of the illustrated Genealogies by John Speed. General title page (1615) in expert facsimile. Text in two column Roman font with the full set of Geneva illustrations and maps. Title to the Second Part (n.d.) with decorated head- and tailpiece. Bound with Apocrypha as issued. New Testament title page (1615) with woodcut border comprising twenty-four small compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Concludes with the Two Tables and dated colophon (1615). Bound with The Booke of Psalms by Sternhold and Hopkins. Woodcut first chapter initials and decorated head and tailpieces throughout.

Binding

Rebound in black calf. Covers with blind panels incorporating rolls and drawer handle tools. Spin withe four raised bands and elaborate tooling to compartments with a red morocco label and the words “Holy Bible” lettered in gilt. Endpapers renewed. A custom folder attached to the rear pastedown for retaining relevant provenance from prior owners dating back to the seventeenth century.

Condition

Occasional, mostly marginal soiling and staining; First few leaves of Genealogies reinforced to fore-edge; B3 lower corner marginal loss; Qq6 (Malachi 1), Fff4 (John 13)  lower corner text loss; Psalter lacks decorative title page and all after Psalm 145; final few extant leaves of Psalter with fore-edge repairs; good margins throughout.

Provenance

Verso of New Testament title page reads “William Springall and Dorathy Nicoll was married upon Thursday being the 31st of March in the year of our Lord 1692. Joseph Spingall departed this life upon Monday morning beign the 22 day of June in the year of our Lord 1702.” First leaf of Psalter with inscription that reads “Daniel Raynor borne the 23rd of June anno 1712.”

Note

This quarto Geneva was the final Geneva Bible printed in England before James banned the printing in England in 1616. Subsequent editions were printed on the continent and smuggled across the channel.
