An octavo edition of the King James Bible in a contemporary. A well-preserved example with the illustrated Genealogies and the popular double page map of Canaan.

Description

Begins with the Book of Common Prayer with engraved title page (1638). Followed by the illustrated Genealogies depicting the lineage from Adam to Christ by J[ohn] S[peed] with printed title page surrounded by a woodcut border ending with the double-page map of the Promised Land. General title page (1638) engraved within woodcut border comprising twenty-four compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Titles feature a heart shaped frame. Text in two column Roman font. Apocrypha included as issued. Similar New Testament title page (1638). Concludes with colophon (1638). Bound with The Whole Booke of Psalmes by Sternhold and Hopkins with title page (1638). Numerous woodcut first chapter initials and head- and tailpieces throughout.

A-Z^8, Aa-Zz^8, Aaa-Rrr^8. Bible text complete with all title pages.

Binding

Contemporary double paneled calf. Boards lined and rolled in blind. Spine with four raised bands. Rubbed and scuffed, with wear to head and foot of spine. No endpapers.

Condition

Occasional toning and staining, mostly to front and rear of volume, and not impacting Bible text; Book of Common Prayer with title page torn with loss and repaired, with the following page torn to lower corner with loss; Iii7 with burn hole to upper fore-edge margin; double-page map trimmed to margins; overall, a very nice and clean copy.
