Description

The Book of Common Prayer with engraved title page (1638), followed by The Genealogies by J[ohn] S[peed] with title page (1638) featuring an ornamental border. Engraved title page (1639) with a woodcut border comprising twenty-four small compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. Text in two column Roman font. Apocrypha included as issued. New Testament title page (1639) similar to general title. Ends on colophon (1639). Bound with The Whole Booke of Psalms (1639) with printed title page featuring an ornamental border. First chapter floriated initials throughout.

Binding

Contemporary rebacked brown paneled calf. Covers with elaborate corner motifs and gilt tooled flowers around a central arabesque. Spine with four raised bands. Ties renewed. All edges gilt. Endpapers renewed.

Condition

Light spotting and staining with a few minor marks; A1-2 Sowing weakening between these two leaves in the BCP; manuscript ownership records to verso of New Testament title showing through; title page of BCP frayed and reinforced to fore-edge with adhesive tape to borders; title page of Genealogies torn to upper gutter with loss to border;

Twentieth century bookplate of Alan Twyman to front free endpaper. Royal arms woodcut on verso of general title surrounded by manuscript owner inscription reading “William Bax his book in the year of Our Lord 1785 was given him by his uncle John Read” and others. Verso of New Testament title page with Nash family records reading “Mary Nash ye daughter of John Nash was borne ye 22 daie of November 1645 and was baptised ye 26 daie of the same month. William Nash ye sonn: of John Nash was borne ye 8 daye of March 1647 and was baptized ye 16 daie of the same month...” and with entries continuing to 1664. Verso of Psalter title page with ownership inscription reading “'John Read his book and was bornd July ye 8th day 1690. Dauter of John Read and Mary Constanc[e] Mary Read and was bornd Feb. ye 1th day 1721...)”
