Description

Bound with the Genealogies by J[ohn] S[peed] with title page (n.d.) depicting the lineage from Adam to Christ. General title page (1639) engraved within woodcut border comprising twenty-four compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. Text in a two column Roman font. Small woodcut of the Garden of Eden before Genesis, David playing the Harp before Psalms, and the Four Evangelists before Matthew. With Apocrypha as issued. Similar New Testament title page (1639). Ends on dated colophon (1639). First chapter woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces throughout.

A-Z^8, Aa-Zz^8, Aaa-Kkk^8. Lacks N4-5 (1 Sam 19:11-25:1) only. 

Binding 

Rebound in modern half brown calf with marbled paper over boards. Spine with four raised bands and the words “The Holy Bible” and the date “1639” lettered in gilt.  Endpapers renewed.

Condition

Light toning and soiling, but a clean text overall with good margins; repair to closed marginal tear of Genealogies title page; N6 with small hole at gutter costing a few words of text; M5, Ee1, Ddd6 lower corner torn away costing a few words of text; Z5 frayed to fore-edge with loss to sidenotes; Bbb2 hole to inner column with loss of three text lines; Bbb4 text loss to outer column.
