The Bible: that is, the Holy Scriptures contained in the Old and New Testament. Translated according to the Hebrew and Greek, and conferred with the best translations in divers languages. With most profitable annotations upon all the hard places, and other things of great importance.

Summary

One of the last Geneva Bibles printed and the first to omit the Apocrypha from the list of books. This folio Breeches Bible contains the scarce Edinburgh illustrations and is printed in large Roman type.

Description

Text in two column Roman font. General title page (1640) with small woodcut of crossing of the Red Sea. Two full-page engravings of the Tabernacle furniture and Aaron’s vestments between Exodus 26-28. Additional maps and woodcuts. Lacks Apocrypha as issued. The New Testament title page (1640) within ruled borders and featuring an ornament of a female head between two cornucopia. Tomson’s revision to the New Testament and Junius’ notes in Revelation. Concludes with the Two Tables. Bound with The Whole Booke of Psalmes by Sternhold and Hopkins with printed title page (1638). The Psalter lacks the final leaf of Prayers, as common. The Names and Order of the Books which omits the Apocrypha is bound at the end of the volume. Woodcut first chapter initials and decorated head and tailpieces throughout.

Collation

Binding

Rebound in brown paneled calf. Spine with five blind-lined raised bands and the words “Holy Bible” in gilt. Endpapers renewed.

Condition

Rubbed; title page strengthened; A1-6 reinforced to edges with marginal loss; A1 silked; most of the Psalter leaves are strengthened with tissue at the fore-edge; light dampstaining along the inner margins of a few leaves, and one closed tear; worming affecting lower margin of last five leaves; a nice copy of a large folio Geneva Bible with full-page engravings.
