Description

The Book of Common Prayer with printed title page (1639) and decorative border.  Composite engraved title page (1640) with a woodcut border comprising twenty-four small compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. Text in two column black letter with each pages surrounded by a printed black border. Apocrypha included as issued. New Testament title page (1641) similar to general title. Ends on colophon (1642). Bound with Downame’s A Briefe Concordance (n.d.) and The Booke of Psalmes by Sternhold and Hopkins, each with a printed title page. First chapter floriated initials, head- and tailpieces throughout.

A^8, A-Z^8, Aa-Zz^8; Aaa-Kkk^8, Lll^4. Bible text complete with both titles.

Binding

Rebound in brown paneled calf. Covers with double paneled border and inner corner fleurons. Spine with four raised bands and one red morocco label with the words “Holy Bible” lettered in gilt; date of 1640 in gilt to foot of spine. Endpapers renewed. All edges red.  

Condition

Infrequent staining, mostly to first and last few leaves of book; BCP title page repaired to gutter; Zz3 with small lower corner text loss; a clean and bright copy with good margins.

Provenance

Inscription on verso of general title reading “John Wallace was born Dec 14, 1788” and “Elizabeth Wallace was born June 21, 1781” in neat hand.
