Summary
A pulpit folio Field’s Bible commemorating the restoration of Charles II. Bound in brown morocco with eighty double plate engravings including the very large foldout of Jerusalem.
Description
2 vols. Engraved title page (1660) by Diepenbeeck and Lambart featuring King Solomon on the throne with David, Moses, and Aaron above. Double page plate of Adam and Eve in the Garden featuring a variety of animals including a unicorn. Text in two column Roman font. Bound with a total of 80 double-page engravings by Visscher which include maps by Hollar, a large fold-out of Jerusalem, and various biblical scenes. Fifty-one engravings in the Old Testament which includes the Apocrypha. Printed New Testament title page (1659) with 29 engravings. Ends on printed colophon (1659).

Binding
Rebacked in brown morocco. Original boards with gilt paneled border. Spines with girl tooling to recessed bands and compartments. Each spine with red morocco labels and the words “Holy Bible” and volume number lettered in gilt. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled.
Condition
The text is clean and bright with wide margins throughout; title page trimmed to edges and laid down; Zz4 with small burnhole to margin; a handful of engravings with marginal closed tears.
Note
A very good copy of the popular Restoration Bible celebrating the return of Charles II. The text was first published the previous year by John Field, printer to the University of Cambridge, who had been commissioned to supply a lectern bible for use in churches and libraries. Former university Vice-Chancellor John Worthington noted that “For a fair large letter, large paper, with fair margin … there was never such a Bible in being”. This work is the first King James Bible provided with illustrations, and with 80 beautiful double-plate engravings.
