Description

Complete Book of Common Prayer with printed title page (1696) at Cambridge. Ruled in red throughout. Engraved general title page (1697) with triple red-ruled border by M. Burghers depicting the giving of the Law, the Baptism of Our Lord, etc. with the device Dominus Illuminatio Mea. Text in two column Roman font. Ruled in red throughout. Includes Apocrypha as issued. Printed New Testament title page. Bound with a complete Whole Book of Psalms (1696).

Collation

A^2, B-Z^8, Aa-Zz^8, Aaa-Kkk^8 (Old Testament), a-k^8 (Apocrypha), A-R^8, S^2 (New Testament). Complete.  

Binding

Brown gilt-paneled polished calf. Spine with six raised bands, fleurons to compartments. All edges gilt. Rebacked with contemporary spine laid down. Endpapers renewed.  

Provenance

Fine inscription to front flyleaf reads “Receive this Holy Book, dear Margaret, as a sure pledge of the sincerest love; May it well read in they good mind beget that faith which leads to endless joyes above.” Ownership inscription to top of BCP title reads “Margaret Hayes Dec ye 20th, 1698.” Family records of George Whitall (b. 1703) to verso of NT title.

Condition

Text a little browned with some spotting. B6 of New Testament with small burn hole to lower margin. Covers a bit worn with small loss to top of spine. Gilt faded. Joints split but holding. Nicely red-ruled, sound and complete throughout.
