Summary

The first quarto King James Bible in black letter type. A complete Bible text retaining attractive contemporary boards. A nice He Bible which closely follows the text of the 1611 first folio edition.

Description

Begins with the Book of Common Prayer with title page and calendar printed in red and black. The Genealogies by J[ohn] S[peed] with title page (n.d.) is complete, issued without map. General title page (1613) engraved within woodcut border comprising twenty-four compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. Both titles omit the words “Appointed to …” Text in two column black letter, closely following the text in the first edition. Ruth 3:15 with the reading “And he went into the citie.” Apocrypha included as issued. New Testament title page (1613) with verso blank. Concludes with colophon (1613). Bound with The Whole Booke of Psalmes by Sternhold and Hopkins with title page (1612). Numerous woodcut first chapter initials and head- and tailpieces throughout.

A^8, A-Z^8, Aa-Zz^8, Aaa-SSS^8. Complete.

Binding

Recently rebacked in brown calf. Contemporary boards with central gilt lozenge. Spine with five raised bands and one red gilt-lined morocco label with the words “Holy Bible” lettered in gilt. All edges speckled red. Endpapers renewed.   

Condition

Some soiling and staining throughout; Title page to BCP soiled and strengthened; small stain to final leaf of Old Testament; O-Bb some damp staining to lower third of text; U6 loss of a few lines of text; Cc3,6,8 (Psalms) lower outer column loss; Dd4,5 loss of sidenotes to fore-edge; metrical psalter lacks the final leaves of prayers, last two signatures with very small lower marginal loss.
