The Geneva Bible, among the early English versions, gained widespread circulation. This Elizabethan family Bible was frequently read at gatherings and home prophesyings leading to an increase in literacy rates across England. It was quoted by Shakespeare and Bunyan as well as the translators of the King James Bible. The Geneva Bible remained unrivaled for three generations, showing a distinct advance on its predecessors. It even made its way to America aboard the Mayflower.

Queen Mary Tudor, a devout Roman Catholic, ascended the throne on July 19, 1553, aiming to restore Roman Catholicism to England. She vigorously persecuted Protestants, prompting an exodus of Protestant scholars to the continent, with a large settlement in Calvin’s Geneva. There a group led by William Whittingham, Anthony Gilby, and Christopher Goodman translated the Bible from the original Hebrew and Greek with the first edition printed in 1560.

Characterized by wide margins, a clear Roman font, and a smaller portable quarto size, the Geneva Bible received immediate positive reception. It was the first study Bible with verse divisions and marginal notes. The book could be carried around, it was easier to read, and the notes and woodcuts provided clarity to the meaning of the difficult passages in the text. Close to 200 editions were printed from 1560 to 1644, resulting in at least 280,000 copies.

Dr. David Daniell notes that, beginning in 1576 when printing resumed in England, the Geneva Bible swiftly became the Bible of the English people. It was designed to provide illumination at every point, and its influence was deemed incalculable.

These specific leaves originate from a 1578 Pulpit Folio, the first pulpit folio Geneva Bible ever printed.
