A 1611 quarto Geneva Bible with the Geneva illustrations and maps. This copy has a misprint in John 6:67 that reads Judas instead of Jesus. Rebacked in contemporary calf with original metalwork.
Description
Begins with the Book of Common Prayer, lacking all before the Psalms. Title with woodcut border comprising twenty-four small compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Text in two column Roman font with the Geneva illustrations and maps. Title to the Second Part (n.d.) with decorated head- and tailpiece. With the Apocrypha, as issued. New Testament title page (1610). John 6:67 reads “Then said Judas to the twelve” instead of “then said Jesus to the twelve.” Concludes with the Two Tables and dated colophon (1611). Bound with The Whole Booke of Psalms by Sternhold and Hopkins with decorative title page (1611) and three other leaves only. Woodcut first chapter initials and decorated head and tailpieces throughout.

Binding
Rebacked in dark brown calf. Beveled oak boards, paneled in blind with concentric frames and adorned with four cornerpieces and centerpiece on each board. Evidence of clasps, retaining hasps. Endpapers renewed.
Condition
Soiling, staining, and spotting with occasional fraying to edges; title pages soiled with general title reimagined; D4, Q3-4 repaired with loss to woodcuts; L7, N5, Qq6 with lower corner repair; repair to title page of the second part reducing headpiece; Ooo5 small burnhole reducing a few words; Psalter title page with loss to printer’s device.
Provenance
Full page decorative inscription in seventeenth century hand reads “Edward Mosley is my name…” before general title with additional inscriptions to verso of NT including a date of 1653; early 18th century records of the Smith family to verso of general title page.

A good copy of an illustrated quarto Geneva Bible - difficult to secure in contemporary boards with both metalwork and misprint.
