Description

Begins with The Book of Common Prayer with printed title page (1679) and the Royal Arms on the title and the final leaf hand colored. The general title page engraved featuring Moses and Aaron, the Royal Arms, and the city of London – the whole is elaborately and beautifully hand colored. The second printed title page follows features a hand colored border and Royal Arms. The text is presented in double column Roman font with first chapter floriated woodcut initials throughout. This is one of the few Bibles that features the text of the King James Version with the beloved marginal notes of the Geneva Bible included. The Apocrypha is supplied in smaller font, likely bound in after arrival in England. The New Testament title page is printed (1683) with the Royal Arms hand colored. The Bible text is followed by a complete Whole Book of Psalms with printed title page (1679) with Royal Arms hand-colored.

Binding

Contemporary rebacked brown paneled calf. Covers with central blind-stamped lozenge surrounded by a blind paneled border and brass cornerpieces over oak beveled boards. Spine with six blind-lined raised bands and blind stamps to compartments. One working brass clasp with evidence of hasps and other clasp. Rubbed and scuffed. Marbled endpapers.

Condition

Book of Common Prayer with title page and first few leaves remargined; A1 (Gen 1) frayed to edges; I2, Q3 with closed marginal tear; x3 closed tear into text without loss; thumbsoiling to edges but a clean text overall.
