Description

3 vols. Bound with an additional engraved title page (n.d.) that reads “The Historical Part of the Holy Bible … Accurately Described in Near Three Hundred Historys.” Followed by a printed title page, both ruled in red. Text in two column Roman font, the whole ruled-in-red throughout. Bound with over 130 full-page engraved plates. Apocrypha included as issued. Volume 1 (Genesis-Nehemiah), Volume 2 (Esther-Malachi), Volume 3 (Matthew-Revelation). Printed New Testament title page (1739). Concludes with an Index.

Collation

A-Z^8, Aa-Ee^8, Ff1-4 (Vol 1); Ff5-8, Aaa-Ddd^8 (Vol 2); Eee-Zzz^8, Aaaa-Hhhh^8, Iiii^2. Complete with all titles and plates.

Binding

Black contemporary paneled calf. Covers with wide gilt-tooled border with birds and flowers. Spines with five raised bands and elaborate tooling to compartments with red morocco title labels. Blue endpapers. Marbled edges. Inner dentelles.

Condition

Text is clean with occasional marginal foxing and staining. Smaller stain to lower edge and gutter of second half of first volume. Joints starting with top board of first volume worn but all boards holding firmly.

Provenance

Armorial bookplate of Edward Eage MD, Staff Surgeon to each front endpaper. Edward Eagle MD (1770-1839) was 25 when he joined the Elgin's Fencible Highlanders as a Surgeon on 30th June 1796. He became staff surgeon of the Forces and an Apothecary and staff surgeon of the Clonmel district, Ireland. Edward married Isabella Poitier, daughter of Charles Poitier, at St James's Church, Dublin, in April 1794.
