Description

Lacks all before Psalm 68 in the Book of Common Prayer. The Genealogies by J[ohn] S[peed] with title page. Bound with an engraved title page (1630) with a woodcut border comprising twenty-four small compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. Text in two column black letter. Apocrypha included as issued. New Testament title page (1630) similar to general title. Ends on colophon (1630). Bound with the Whole Booke of Psalms (1632) with printed title page. First chapter floriated initials throughout.

a^8, A-Z^8, Aa-Zz^8; Aaa-Rrr^8. Bible text complete with both titles.

Binding

Contemporary brown paneled calf. Boards with ruled border and featuring central lozenge. Spine with four raised bands. Rubbed with top of spine chipped and corners bumped. All edges red. Rear joint partially cracked but reinforced at hinge and holding firm.

Condition

Occasional spotting and staining but quite clean overall with good margins throughout. Signatures of BCP and title page to Genealogies starting to come loose; Genealogies lacks first two leaves and the map; A1 (Gen 1) closed tear to head repaired with tissue obstructing headline; C8 (Ex 9) lower third of bottom corner torn away with loss; Ggg5 lower gutter repair without loss; pin-sized worm track above headline in Apocrypha and first half of New Testament; Psalter lacks all after Psalm 73 with final two leaves frayed and tattered.

Inscribed to pastedown for “Dan. Negus, Jan 1756” and some earlier indistinct inscriptions.
