Pansebeia, [Greek] or, A view of all religions in the world with the several church governments from the creation, to these times: also, a discovery of all known heresies in all ages and places, and choice observations and reflections through the whole. The Second edition, enlarged and perfected … To which are annexed, the lives, actions, and ends of certain notorious hereticks. With their effigies in copper-plates.
Description
With engraved portrait of Alexander Ross and printed title page with printer’s device. Rare half-title bound at the end of the Preface. Text in single column Roman font. Bound with Apocalypsis with its own title page. It was translated by John Davies from "Apocalypsis insignium aliquot haeresiarcharvm" (Lugduni-Batavorum, 1608), and contains seventeen engraved portraits.
An ambitious compendium surveying the religions of the world, their rites, doctrines, and ecclesiastical governments from antiquity to Ross’s own day. Written from a learned Protestant perspective, the work catalogues not only Judaism, Islam, pagan traditions, and global belief systems, but also the full range of Christian sects and “heresies,” tracing their origins, doctrines, and historical development. The enlarged second edition adds substantial material, including biographical accounts of notable heretics, making it one of the era’s most expansive English heresiographies. A revealing monument of early comparative religion and confessional scholarship.
